A PIONEER IN SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

Irvine Company® has been a pioneer in sustainable development with environmental stewardship at its core since the company's founding in 1864. And, when the company made the historic decision to master plan The Irvine Ranch® in Orange County, Calif. in the late 1950s, environmental stewardship was an inseparable component of that process. Today our commitment to environmental stewardship is stronger than ever. Our teams of dedicated specialists take great pride in managing and caring for the environmental impact of our portfolio through water, energy and waste conservation and achieve significant savings across our entire portfolio. Our efforts range from the everyday—installing high-efficiency plumbing at hundreds of our properties—to the grand—preservation of more than 57,000 acres of open space and parks (more than 60% of the 93,000-acre Irvine Ranch). We continually seek ways to balance community needs with those of the environment throughout the company's entire portfolio of office, apartment, retail and resort holdings in Orange County, San Diego, West Los Angeles, and Silicon Valley.

The Irvine Company is an American private company focused on real estate development. It is headquartered in Newport Center, California, with a large portion of its operations centered in and around Irvine, California, a planned city of 250,000 people mainly designed by the Irvine Company. The company was founded by the Irvine family and is currently wholly owned by Donald Bren. Since the company is private, its financials are not released to the public. However, Donald Bren is the richest real estate developer in the United States, valued at $15.4 billion.

GOOD PLANNING GOES A LONG WAY

More than 60 years of highly praised, large-scale master planning, design and building is imbedded in our company DNA, and informs and guides all that we do.

We planned and developed, from scratch, Irvine, a California city of nearly 250,000 residents that is world renowned today for its charming neighborhood villages, vibrant work communities, top-ranked schools and lowest crime rate of any large American city.

Our comprehensive planning and long-term ownership philosophy translate into timeless designs, exceptional quality, continued reinvestment, sustainability, thoughtful stewardship, and community engagement. We care for all the land—both which is developed and that which is conserved.

On 93,000-acre Irvine Ranch, we’ve permanently preserved more than 60% of the land, creating a biologically and geologically diverse, 22-mile swath of open space in Orange County, Calif. that stretches from the Cleveland National Forest to the Pacific Ocean.

Our commitment to the environment also extends to our sustainable work/live/play mixed-use communities; industry-leading water conservation efforts; the world’s first fleet of hybrid-electric buildings; Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED)-certified buildings (first in California with more than 60 office buildings); and a No. 1 ranking nationwide by the Environmental Protection Agency for energy-efficient buildings.

Through careful planning and a long-term commitment, we create sustainable living, working and shopping environments that allow residents, customers and businesses to flourish. For more details, please see “10 Facts to Know About Irvine Company.”
